Somewhere, not here

I know I’m in the minority when I say this, but I am not feeling this book. At alllllll.
The footnotes? Annoying to me. This is not a textbook. I don’t like interrupting the narrative to go read them to figure out what’s going on and then still being confused. Also, I don’t speak a lick of Spanish so there are times when I really wish they would translate some of the less obvious exchanges…
Due back at the library tomorrow and I doubt I’ll finish it. I never do that.

Glad to see I am not the only one. Not finishing this book has been my secret shame for months, since everyone I know loved it. People with hella good taste too. I read half and patted myself on the back for getting that far. Great characters but too many narrative bells and whistles and not enough storytelling (in my humble opinion). Thousands of readers and the Pulitzer Prize committee disagree with me, though, so I am willing to contemplate the notion that I am the problem here.
